Could Acne be a Blessing in Disguise? (A Health Awakening?)

Updated: Jun 24, 2021

If you're experiencing acne right now, thinking that it could be a blessing in disguise may be a weird concept. And that's all it is - a concept. One that I believe to be true for me (but it may not be for you).

Are health issues a blessing in disguise? Is that even a possibility?

The catalyst to becoming aware of what health really means was when my parents both developed cancer.

This intertwined with my own health issues (chronic acne, anxiety & depression amongst other minor issues) led to me the question: Could chronic issues in the body actually be a blessing in disguise?

I was terrified when I found out that both my parents had cancer (this was over 12 years ago). In no way did I see it as a blessing. And actually, I still don't. How can I? They're my parents and I love them.

Them getting ill and my mum having chemotherapy triggered me (out of desperation) to research alternative ways of healing. I read books and books, searched online, and went to Mind Body Spirit fairs to work out why our bodies get sick, and how we can truly heal them.

When things go wrong in the body, we're being given warning signs.

This also applies to acne. Acne is a warning sign that something is going on in the body that needs support.

I don't believe that things happen by accident in the body. There's always a physical, spiritual, or emotional root cause (or combination of all three).

For me, the reason acne has been a blessing in disguise is because:

1) If I didn't develop acne (which is such a visible issue), I likely wouldn't have been bothered about my health and would have continued to have a terrible diet and lifestyle.

2) I probably wouldn't have studied Nutrition and Health Coaching.

3) I may not have learnt that popping pills (like the birth control pill or antibiotics) are not the answer.

Chronic illnesses may not feel like a blessing in disguise, but I believe that sometimes they can be. They can teach us about ourselves, our bodies and urge us to take our health seriously.

For me, my chronic health issues triggered a sort of health awakening. And because acne is so visible, something that I was literally faced with every time I looked in the mirror, I couldn't ignore it. I couldn't ignore my body's warning signs.
