When anxiety and panic are your initiation
My 'initiation' began as a child, when I felt anxious about many things but had no words to explain.
My initiation really kicked in to gear as a teenager and in my 20's, when I experienced extreme anxiety and panic attacks.
It took me until my mid-30's until I really GOT it: I'm highly sensitive and intuitive, but I'm refusing to fully embrace and harness it and so it's turning in to anxiety and panic.
I believe anxiety is often experienced by intuitive, energetically sensitive women, when they haven't realised their sensitivity is their advantage, a serious skill that needs to be harnessed, honored and honed.
I've heard similar stories over the years of women working in corporate jobs who experience panic attacks, and quite literally have to quit their jobs because they can't cope with the energies, the environment or the general stress of the job - only to later find out that they're clairvoyant, or have a specific gift that they're meant to be using.
Some of these women never realise their gift IS their sensitivity, emapthy and the ability to deeply feel because our sensitivity has been:
laughed at
critiqued
completely mislabelled as 'weak'
It has also been treated as:
an annoyance
a characteristic of a 'weirdo!'
So we often end up:
hiding away our sensitivity and rejecting it in ourselves and others
laughing or numbing away the pain
using alcohol, medication or other coping mechanisms
Is this by design?
I fully believe that the sensitivity and intuition of women has been purposly clamped down on, just think of how women used to be referred to as 'hysterical' (ever wonder why a hysterectomy is called that?).
This makes it even more vital that we CLAIM our power, strength, gifts and that we do not go along with the dampening or suppressing of sensitive girls and women.
Why am i calling it an initiation?
I call anxiety/panic an initiation from my perspective because for me, it has been a series of 'trials and tribulations' I've had to go through, to then FINALLY own my sensitivity and intuition as an absolute honor and privilege, as oppose to something that's 'wrong with me' or something that I need to suppress or dampen down.
Initiations can be painful, and that is exactly what chronic anxiety and panic attacks are; they can be painful experiences but they can lead us (the specific group of women I'm talking to) to make changes in our lives. For example, the panic attacks I used to get whilst commuting to a busy office; this was a wake up call that my system absolutely hated the Monday-Friday SLOG of commuting and working a full day in a terrible environment (fluorescent lights, 100's of people, technology smog everywhere).
I had to make some big changes to address my life, and when i did, my anxiety and panic dissolved.
The overwhelm and fear that is experienced leads us to learning how to really ground in the physical body; we have to learn how to feel at home in our bodies and then we can really use the sensitivity as the gift and skill that it is.
May we finally listen and really hear our bodys calls out for attention.
May we finally honor our energetic sensitivity.
