Financial Barriers to Healing Acne Holistically

Updated: Jun 24, 2021

Is it only the financially wealthy who can afford to heal their skin holistically?

Organic food, high quality supplements and products, acne protocols, one on one nutrition and health coaching, exercise classes, having a facial done by an esthetician: they all cost money, and often the price is high in return for (usually) excellent quality.

You don't necessarily need all of the above in order to clear skin holistically, but for people who have access and are able to afford this, it's an immense advantage.

I hear the notion that being healthy is inexpensive and available to everyone, but in my opinion that's not fully true.

I know this from personal experience. I've been in a situation where I simply can't afford to buy everything organic, and certainly couldn't afford coaching or a full acne protocol. Bills and rent needed to get paid before anything else.

Whilst I say this, I want to mention some of the free or more affordable ways that people can get healthier, for example:

  • Breath work and meditation. Most people are able to do these from home, with the help of a free YouTube video.

  • Making simple food swaps (switching out cow's milk for a decent almond milk for example).

  • Exercise; walking, running, dancing.

But, guess what? Some of these steps aren't available to everyone, let's say you live in a neighbourhood where you don't feel safe enough to go walking or running. Maybe you're working two jobs and you're always exhausted, and the idea of preparing healthy meals at home isn't fathomable. You may not have the time, resources or energy to be able to get yourself to a state of optimal health.

A lack of money is disempowering.

I understand why people (including my past self) choose to take medication such as the birth control pill, to keep acne at bay. In the U.K we can get the birth control pill for free, so of course, for people who are struggling financially this may be the best option.

I know this isn't the case for everyone, sometimes medications are subsidised, sometimes you have to have health insurance - but often, it still works out more affordable than healing holistically.

I would argue that in the long term, healing holistically actually saves you money, as being in optimal health will mean you experience less health problems long term. But most people are looking for immediate, short term solutions when they're struggling financially and they don't have an abundance of time.

Ultimately, health IS wealth. If we don't have our health, life is harder in every way. And also, people have to do what they have to do in order to get by. Many people are simply surviving, and getting by day by day (pay check to pay check).

To conclude, there are many ways in which we can improve our health that are low cost or free and at the same time, I believe it's so much harder for those who genuinely don't have the financial means.

I don't have all the answers, but I do have a vision of being able to create a fairer system where optimal health for everyone is the goal, where everyone has access to high quality food and supplements and doesn't have to work themselves to the point of burnt out just to get by.
